Remodeling in St. Paul, Minnesota
With autumn cruising in many St. Paul homeowners' thoughts turn to renovations, both major and cosmetic. One of the first decisions homeowners should make is deciding what jobs they can do themselves and the projects which require a professional. Depending on how handy a person is there are some improvements that can be accomplished as do-it-yourself projects. These include painting, wallpapering, storage, door hanging, screens, insulating, weatherstripping, some flooring and fencing, all of which can be accomplished by a person, or persons, using basic instruction.

| Fall is also a great time for landscaping in the St. Paul area. Professionals can redesign the yard area setting in shrubs and bulbs so that spring will bring in a splendor of color and arboreal artistry. Deck building is also popular and, like fall landscaping, sets up the yard for a fun and labor-free summer season. Decks can be do-it-yourself or you can hire a carpenter. |

Other jobs require professionals who not only have the experience but are licensed and have insurance for the project and their workers. This includes bathrooms, kitchens, room additions and garages. |
| The City of Saint Paul requires that all residential building contractors and residential remodelers performing general building or remodeling on a structure that has four or less dwelling units (including detached garages) be licensed. The owner of the structure does not need a license if they are doing the general building or remodeling themselves. |

| Non-structural revisions or remodelings that do not constitute normal maintenance require a building permit if the value, including both labor value and the cost of materials, exceeds $500.00. Any structure in an Historic Preservation Area needs a permit for exterior work or repairs such as tuckpointing, siding, window replacement, patching a roof, etc., regardless of the value. |
